Chinmaya Mission Austin is privileged to host a series of spiritual discourses by His Holiness, Swami Tejomayananda, head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide. Swami Tejomayananda has served as an acharya, or dean, of the 'Sandeepany' institutes of Vedanta both in India and California, and has conducted many lectures around the world. He has written commentaries on scriptural texts and authored a number of books, and appears regularly on the Indian television channel "Aastha" for spiritual discourses. One of his key contributions is 'Hindu Culture: An Introduction,' a text acclaimed for its clear description of the basics of Hinduism and adopted as a text in some American high schools. In recognition of his remarkable dedication, 'Hinduism Today’ honored Swami Tejomayananda with the prestigious "Hindu of the Year" (2005) award.

The Chinmaya Mission Austin is privileged to host three events in conjunction with Swami Tejomayananda's visit.

This discourse covers the chapter entitled “The Royal Secret” from the sacred text of Bhagavad Gita in which Lord Krishna explains logically the theory of self-perfection and path of self-development to the warrior Arjuna, a representative of the ordinary man of his time.

This short treatise of 18 verses by Swami Tejomayananda examines the challenges of the spiritual path and ways to overcome difficulties in order to reach the goal of leading a fulfilling life. Swamiji's lucidity makes profound spiritual ideas easily comprehensible even to a casual reader. Swamiji takes a logical approach to discover the cause of confusion, stress and unhappiness in daily living, and sets out ways to lead a life filled with harmony, purpose and wisdom.

The banquet is Chinmaya Mission Austin's annual fundraiser, and will feature an evening of classical music by Aparna Jujjavarapu accompanied by Narsimha Kikkeri on the violin and Arjun Narayanan on the mridangam. Aparna Jujjavarapu, a lawyer by profession, is an accomplished singer with a rare talent and knowledge to perform and express the versatility of both the theoretical and practical nuances of classical Carnatic music. She started learning music at the age of five and has received advanced tutelage from her Guru Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. R Vedavalli. Along with accompanying her Guru as vocal support for several concerts and Lec-Dems across India, Aparna has also performed at the All India Radio, both in Carnatic vocal and Veena besides several other performances in India, Sri Lanka, Miami and New Jersey, USA. She has to her credit devotional albums such as Hari Om Vol. IV, Gyana Ganga and Abhinandanam. She had the rare privilege of singing with Swami Tejomayananda in the album Abhinandanam and has been dubbed by him as the “Nightingale” of Chinmaya Mission, Chennai.

The proceeds of the banquet will be applied towards building classrooms for weekly educational sessions for children, teenagers and adults to learn about the values and spiritual heritage of India. Currently, the Chinmaya Mission Austin holds weekly classes on spirituality in a single building to serve more than 300 children and adults. As the number of attendees has doubled over the last two years, and continues to grow, it is hoped that through the expansion of the facilities, more members of the Austin community will be served.
